Labour love!
Okaaay, so delayed post on Labour Conference.
What can I say, the whole thing was awesome. Met lots of new people, and caught up with old friends. It's fun being at the stage when a lot of MPs know me and are actually happy to chat, instead of the polite, "nice to meet you" chit-chat. Plus they buy you even more drinks at that stage.
We did a great job selling t-shirts, with my trick of going up to MPs and saying, "damn, you'd look good in this," working well. I even sold Peter Davis a matching his-and-hers set. Awwwwwww. I also made friends with Helen's little sister Sandra, she's so lovely. She helped me out when I got Helen to sign a bunch of rossettes for the big whip around. One of the t-shirts adorned with one of my rossettes was auctioned off for $110! To Marian Hobbes, the bike riding nun!
Both of Helen's speeches were awesome. I'm so glad she mentioned section 59, and I hope other MPs are swayed by her stance, which, of course, is the right one. Entertainment from Sir Howard Morrison and Melvina Major was great too.
We had a showing of An Inconvenient Truth. I was weary, because I had the feeling it was just scare-mongering. But I actually came out off it, not dejected, but positive that something can actually be done. The problem of Climate Change is a huge one, and will take massive efforts to to make a satisfactory change. But, there was an excellent section outlining previous problems that have been solved by people making a huge collective effort. Including the hole in the Ozone layer. Individuals and comapanies changed their habits in huge ways, and as a result, the increase of the size of the hole has been reversed, and it has actually shrunk. The media accused Labour of discussing Climate Change because this is a 'safe' topic. My cousin in Australia is very surprised at this. Over there it's a massive political issue. Over here, it's widely acknowledged that its a problem, but the different levels of priority it's given varies hugely.
I didn't get drunk at all, but had a few drinks over terrible karoke. Me and Anna are planning a fundraiser. If we end up having a christmas party, we'll get up and sing, and only stop when we've made a certain amount of money. Genius. Geoff's parents were legends, opening up their house to hoardes of drunkards, feeding us, giving us beds and even supplying the grog! Awesome. I think I could get used to bacon and egg breakfasts everyday. My belly wouldn't though.
I didn't make it on the Sunday, being exhausted from dramas of the previous night, but I wasn't a voting delegate anyway. Well done Kate for winning by an excellent margin!
